Why the Institute?

Prof Henri Bismuth Surgeon, founder of the Institute

Liver diseases, including liver cancer, continue to grow, particularly with nearly 500 million people worldwide infected with viral hepatitis. Hepatitis B and especially C - causes of cancers and cirrhosis - can have dramatic consequences. Patients die without being able to be operated on correctly by specialists: few surgeons have acquired the knowledge to perform complex liver operations.

Facing the lack of appropriate training in this specialty, the Hepatobiliary Institute was created. Its primary purpose is to develop specialized practical training in Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary Surgery, taught by recognized international experts. My commitment is to transmit expertise to surgeons from around the world, and particularly to those from developing countries, so that in turn, they can train other specialists in their country and thus save human lives.

In order to make this training accessible to every digestive surgeon - regardless of his country of origin or social condition - we develop partnerships in the form of sponsorships with institutions, foundations, associations, industrialists, pharmaceutical groups and medical technology companies.
