3 × 4 months Internships in different specialized centers
6 years Experience in surgery required
4 000 Registration fees
Prerequisites

The Master program aims to train young surgeons from around the world in hepato-biliary and pancreatic surgery. To apply: 4 years of surgical residency and 2 years of postgraduate training in digestive surgery, that is 6 years of experience after obtaining a medical degree.

The Master year

Program

The training consists of three full-time internships of four months each, carried out in different specialized centers around the world, under the supervision of an internationally recognized mentor. During this year, the trainee surgeon has no clinical responsibilities.

  • Weekly reports documenting all activities, validated monthly by the mentor, who provides an overall assessment at the end of the internship.
  • Participation in publication work during each internship period.
  • Writing of a dissertation, the subject of which is chosen with the mentors and is based on clinical cases from the centers attended.

Validation of the year

To validate the year, the trainee must:

  1. Obtain approval from each of his/her internship supervisors, with validation of each period. If an internship is not validated, another one must be completed - no candidate can take the final examination without having validated three internships.
  2. Participate in meetings and conferences during the year.
  3. Validate the « immersion week »: a week in a center where they have never worked, during which a mentor evaluates their surgical knowledge, their ability to diagnose a disease and their mastery of techniques.
  4. Pass the final exam, directed by several mentors: evaluation of internships, the immersion week, the dissertation, publications and scientific activities of the year.

Registration & fees

4 000 €Registration fees

This amount covers all the Institute's procedures to organize internship periods, administrative follow-up of the trainee and organization of the final exam.

  • The three internships (4 months each) are unpaid and the final exam takes place in Paris: trainees assume the costs of daily living expenses and travel (varying according to the city and center).
  • The Institute does not grant scholarships but can help search for them, and provide a letter of recommendation to accepted candidates. Candidates sponsored by their institution or their country are particularly appreciated.
  • The procedures for finding an internship only begin once registration has been paid.

For internships in Europe, registration must be completed no later than three months before the start of training:

  • 30 Novembersession starting 1st March

  • July 31November 1st session

For other regions of the world, registration must be completed even earlier, due to visa procedures, which are much longer - an increasingly difficult challenge.
